Finding the Calm in the Chaos
Life often feels like a whirlwind. Especially as a student living abroad, I wake up each day surrounded by schedules, expectations, and the constant rush of time. Assignments pile up. Teachers ask for more. Friends expect me to join them. My phone buzzes. My mind buzzes even louder.
It is chaos. A kind of chaos that never really goes away.
But I’ve learned that even in the middle of all that, calm can still be found — quietly, softly, without needing permission. For me, calm shows up when the sun begins to set.
There is something magical about sunsets. They arrive without asking for attention, yet somehow they always take my breath away. The sky becomes a canvas — soft strokes of pink, golden orange melting into purple, and sometimes even that brief shade of fiery red that feels like the sky itself is alive. And in those minutes, the world that felt overwhelming suddenly feels bearable.
I think it’s because sunsets remind me of rhythm. No matter how hard the day has been, the sun still sets. No matter how much noise fills my head, the colors still appear. It doesn’t wait for me to be ready, it doesn’t need me to be perfect — it just happens. Faithfully. Daily. Quietly teaching me that endings can be beautiful, and that chaos doesn’t have the final word.
When I stand and watch the sunset, I let myself slow down. The thoughts that once ran wild in my head start to line up more gently. Breathing feels easier. My heart feels a little lighter. It’s as if the sunset says, “Look, everything passes. Even this day, even this fatigue, even this chaos. And look how beautiful it can end.”
Sometimes I capture it on my camera. Sometimes I just stand there, in silence, storing the image in my memory. And sometimes, it feels like the sunset is not just in the sky, but also inside me — calming me from the inside out.
I’ve watched them from dorm windows, from schoolyards, from balconies, from roads while walking back from a tiring day. Each one is a little different, but all of them carry the same message: calm exists, even when life is loud.
Tomorrow, the chaos will return. Classes will begin again. The future will continue to feel uncertain. And yes, sometimes I will still feel lost. But as long as the sun keeps setting, I will know how to find my calm again.
Because calm is not something we chase. Calm is something we notice. It’s there, waiting, quietly, like the evening sky turning gold while no one else pays attention.
And I have promised myself: no matter how busy life gets, I will keep looking up. I will keep watching. I will keep finding my calm in the chaos.
Because as long as the sunset exists, I know peace will, too and…
see you here for a minute every day!
